EIGHTEEN

Swish. Thud, thud. Swish. Thud, thud. My wings, my heart. On and on they went, the rhythm louder than anything else in the quiet night. Other wings sliced the air, causing a light whistling around us. Heavy breaths sounded from the mass of fae, witch, and dragons, while birds added tiny squawks and chirps to what could be the opening notes of a battle song. The moon shined from directly above, highlighting every body and set of flapping wings, their positions spread above, below, and at both sides.

Xavyn extended his arm and pointed down to the dense canopy. The openings had grown fewer, shielding more from our positions, but Xavyn had spotted our ground element, carriages trailing at the back of the horde of horses galloping toward Heilagr. We’d arrived. We dared not call out to them, knowing our voices would travel far through this night yet die under the din of beating hooves and creaking wheels. They would see, though. They knew to look up, to wait for our approach if we hadn’t passed them. As it were, we would pass by and arrive a small amount of time sooner, which was what had been planned. Our large number in the sky would be a distraction and possibly a deterrent for those who had been tricked into submission by Verdandi. We hoped it would help some choose reason over blood.

Within moments, the sight we’d been waiting for appeared. Ahead, the wood thinned and spread, creating a clearing that held a lone, bare tree. Tall and sleek, the Vicis stood, its spire pointing high as if it were a sword longing to stab the sky.

I felt nothing. No other hollow feeling, no pulsing call from somewhere deep inside as I’d felt with the other feathers. It was different than the ache of emptiness, and noticeably missing. Had she subdued it somehow?

Fire burst into life below. The wood stacks were the source. It was instant, as if they’d been blasted by dragons. Flames licked high into the air, though most were covered by the dense canopy. The glow was enough to spot each, maybe twenty, their positions spaced in a perfect circle surrounding the Vicis, with one close to it in the center. While it might not have appeared to be a strong defense, we all knew better. This was beyond the simple use of fire for weapons. This was for their unity, a bond between them all.

Already within their perimeter, we gave the signal to our other allies, waiting in the south-western wood. With a call from Xavyn, Amias patted Vex’s neck, and she sputtered a cough. A ball of flames spat from her mouth directly after.

As soon as our positions were revealed, fire tipped arrows propelled skyward. We all broke apart, banking and twisting to avoid the streaks of light. Our archers returned fire, knowing that our ground element hadn’t yet arrived. It was time for us to clear away as many as we could before our warriors entered the area.
